Bonds

Two types of debt instruments are traded on the Warsaw Stock Exchange: Treasury and corporate bonds. All bonds are quoted in the continuous trading system. The transaction unit is one bond.

1. State Treasury bonds

In terms of maturity date, Exchange-listed bonds may be dived into the following groups:

- 2-year - nominal value = 1000 zl
- 3-year - nominal value = 100 zl
- 5-year - nominal value = 1000 zl
- 10-year - nominal value = 1000 zl

In terms of interest calculation method, Exchange listed bonds may be divided into three groups: floating interest, fixed interest and zero coupon.

Floating interest-rate bonds
Three- and ten-year floating interest-rate bonds are traded.
For owners of three-year bonds interest is paid out quarterly. It is calculated based on the average yield of 13-week Treasury bills.
Interest on ten-year bonds is paid once a year. It is calculated based on the average yield on 52-week Treasury bills.

Fixed interest-rate bonds
There are three types of these bonds listed: two-, five- and ten-year.
Interest on these bonds, depending on the maturity date, ranges from 6% to 12% annually, and is paid once a year.

Zero-coupon bonds
In the case of these bonds, income comes in the form of a sale discount. At the maturity the holder receives an amount equal to the bond's nominal value.

2. Corporate bonds

Corporate bonds are issued based on the Bond Act.

There are two corporate bond programmes in trading:

- a convertible bond programme issued by an Exchange-listed company - Comarch
- a Polish zloty bond programme issued by the European Investment Bank (EIB)
Settlement price
Closing price shown in the daily quotation table, is the market price of a bond. It is stated as a percentage of the bond nominal value. To determine the settlement price, however, the accrued interest (provided also in the above-mentioned table) should be added to the market price.

Thus, the settlement price calculation formula is as follows:

settlement price = accrued interest + (bond nominal value * closing price)
